Liberals Suddenly Realize How Many Immigrants Obama Deported – Storm Biden Campaign HQ

Activists stormed Joe Biden’s presidential campaign headquarters on Wednesday to protest the record-number of immigrant deportations under the Obama administration.

According to Huffpost, approximately 40 activists held a sit-in the lobby of the Philadelphia building, refusing to leave until Biden apologized for his role in the expulsions. Carrying bullhorns and protest signs, they also demanded that Biden’s 2020 campaign commit to a more liberal immigration platform.

Some of the activists were family members of immigrants deported during Biden’s time as President Barack Obama’s vice president.

“We can’t ignore the fact he was complacent to Obama’s vicious deportation machine,” said Catalina Santiago, the media coordinator of Movimiento Cosecha, the New Jersey-based immigrant rights group that organized the demonstration. “He is shamelessly ignoring the countless families he destroyed.”

After about an hour and a half, Philadelphia police showed up and made the protestors move outside the building, HuffPost reported. Six activists were arrested while others fled for fear of being transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

Biden was in Iowa for a campaign event at the time, and did not address the protestors.

An inconvenient truth about Obama’s immigration policy

In their fervent opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, Democrats have largely ignored his predecessor’s record. They have sometimes gone as far as blaming Trump for Obama’s actions.

Besides operating and in some cases building the detention centers provoking so much uproar on the left, Obama oversaw more annual deportations than Trump has ever managed – thereby earning the sobriquet “Deporter-in-Chief.”

Total deportations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Obama were above 385,000 each year in fiscal years 2009-2011, reaching a high of 409,849 in fiscal 2012. By comparison, Trump oversaw 282,242 deportation this fiscal year, which was a record for him.

Obama’s defenders have noted that he hoped to trade enforcement for Republican concessions on protecting immigrants already in the country. And in 2012, he enacted protections for some undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children, known as “Dreamers,” by executive action.

So far on the campaign trail, Biden has remained focused on those aspects of the Obama legacy in which he shares.

“President Obama, I think, did a heck of a job,” he said during the first 2020 Democratic presidential debate in June. “To compare him to what [Trump] is doing is … close to immoral.”

However, Biden also joined all the candidates on stage in endorsing amnesty for undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States, with the sole exception of criminals, and giving such immigrants free healthcare.
