Ocasio-Cortez Avoids Paying Taxes on Her Failed Business: My Lawyers Are Looking Into It

“Duh, well of course I literally meant that you pay taxes not me.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has been accused of hypocrisy after it was revealed Saturday that she has failed to pay years-old taxes.

The New York Post reported that the freshman Democrat owes her home state $1,877.56 in unpaid corporate taxes for a failed business venture. The outstanding tax lien dates back to 2012 and relates to a company set up in the Bronx to print books about the city’s children.

According to the Post, it alerted Ocasio-Cortez’s office about the issue two week ago and her spokesman promised the back taxes would be paid right away.

However, on Thursday, her aide Corbin Trent said that the congresswoman’s lawyers were looking into the matter.

“I’m her congressional staffer, not her personal accountant,” he said.

Many Twitter users saw a contradiction between Ocasio-Cortez’s failure to pay up and her democratic socialist rhetoric. She has urged hiking taxes on the rich, and proposed massive increases in government spending without explaining how she would pay for them.

A number of people trolled Ocasio-Cortez for not paying her “fair share.”

Conservative Canadian lawyer Manny Montenegrino mocked Ocasio-Cortez as a socialist airhead.

Others saw her as representative of Democrats in general.

The Post earlier this month outed Ocasio-Cortez for similarly failing to live up to her environmentalist rhetoric by wracking up big transportation bills even as she warns of an eminent disaster from climate change.
