Since he bought Twitter this week for $44billion, Elon Musk has a lot of things to say on free speech.
Twitter’s Independent Board Chair Bret TaylorMusk announced the purchase of the platform
“The Twitter Board conducted a thoughtful and comprehensive process to assess Elon’s proposal with a deliberate focus on value, certainty, and financing. It will bring a large cash premium to Twitter, which we consider the best option for its stockholders.
Musk claimed that his purchase of the platform was motivated by a commitment for free speech.
His statement read, “Free speech forms the foundation of any functioning democracy and Twitter is where vital issues for the future of mankind are discussed.”
He added that he wanted to make Twitter “better than ever.”
“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans,” he said. “Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”
Musk spoke on Tuesday evening about his promise to free speech.
“By “free speech”, I simply mean that which matches the law.” he tweeted. “I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law. People will demand that the government pass laws to limit free speech if they want to be less libertarian. Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people.”
For Twitter’s famous censorship the Hunter Biden laptop story from the New York PostHe used more forceful words. Newsbusters reported that the publication’s account was also locked because Twitter said it “distributed hacked material.” Musk admitted the decision was wrong.
“Suspending the Twitter account of a major news organization for publishing a truthful story was obviously incredibly inappropriate,” he tweeted.
He also responded to the “extreme” reactionsBy someone online, after he had purchased the platform.
“The extreme antibody reaction from those who fear free speech says it all.” he tweeted.
In sum, Musk said he supported freedom of speech for his “worst critics.”
“I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means,” he tweeted.
