Friday is Deadline: White House MSNBC analyst (and long-ago chairman of the Republican National Committee) Michael Steele dramatically warned that Sen. Chuck Grassley demonstrated the Republican “infection” when he objected to a much more aggressive Internal Revenue Service marching out to audit small businesses.
It was an episode about alleged misinformation. This screen graphic said “IRS becomes the target of GOP misinformation as Dems pass spending bills.” A very short clip was used to show the Iowa senator. Fox & Friends on August 11 wondering if the IRS was going to have a “strike force” carrying “AK-15s” [sic].
They did not provide the context that the IRS put out an employment notice for agents playing up they should be fit enough to respond in “life-threatening situations” and “Carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary.” The IRS did take that thing down after it caused a ruckus.
This was a “Republicans have a deadly Trump infection” moment.
JOHN HEILEMANN – I question you Michael Steele if there was a time when Democratic children from Northwestern University were sent to work in Chuck Grassley’s offices as summer interns. He was seen as a moderate Republican. Over time, he has become more conservative. That’s not conservative. This is someone who was — that’s The Invasion by the Body Snatchers.
Chuck Grassley basically saying — painting a picture of IRS agents with automatic weapons looking for people who have pass-through income and brandishing them in strike-force fashion. This is paranoia at its worst, crazy conspiracy theory. Is Chuck Grassley dead? And what about all the other people in the Republican Party who were like Chuck Grassley and now speak this way too?
MICHAEL STELE: This is what I call an infection.. This infection was possible to be stopped in 2016. It happened on the stage, where Donald Trump stood with 15 Republicans. The wound should be treated immediately He was opening up.
But they saw two things in this moment that were valuable. One, we can control this guy because he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and two, the base. The base is feeding off of it gets ‘em stirred up, and we want them to turn out. Chuck Grassley will continue to serve even though he is stepping down. Infected This particular element of Republicanism.
Is Steele really certain that Trump’s Republican rivals did not try to debate him at the debate stage? Steele could have joked that Steele’s MSNBC friends Joe and Mika Scarborough had been much more supportive of Donald Trump than he was and refused to “cauterize” his wound. Trump was heavily promoted by the media because Team Hillary believed he would be an easy opponent.
Morning JoeOn this Fox clip, Steele also attacked Grassley. Steele concluded “Chuck Grassley knows damn well the IRS is not armed with AR-15s coming to someone’s small business. That he knows! It’s not a good idea to be honest.
