A new set of primaries on Tuesday. This week, it’s Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, and the Special Election for US House District 34 in Texas. Here’s what to keep an eye on:
Maine
Maine has nothing crazy. As is the Republican primary to House District 1, both the Democrat Congressional and Republican races are uncontested. House District 2 is a battleground between Republicans Bruce Poliquin (the incumbent) and Elizabeth Caruso (the challenger). In the gubernatorial primaries, Democrat Janet Mills (the incumbent) is running unopposed, as is former Governor Republican Paul LePage (who left the office in 2019 due to Maine’s non-consecutive term limits).
Nevada
Three Congressional Districts are at stake in Nevada for Democrats. There is no race in the fourth. Four Congressional Districts for Republicans are up for grabs. There are five Democrats, which includes incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto, and nine Republicans. This race also features Adam Laxalt (who is supported by Trump). Of note, both tickets feature “None of These Candidates” as a listed option. The same is true for the gubernatorial primaries, where the Democrat contenders include incumbent Steve Sisolak, while the Republican race features 16 candidates, including Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo (who also has Trump’s endorsement), as well as the aforementioned “None.”
North Dakota
For the at-large House seat in North Dakota, both the Democrat and the Republican candidates are running unopposed — the Republican, Kelly Armstrong, being the incumbent. Two Democrats are vying for the Senate seat in the primary, along with incumbent Republican John Hoeven, who’s being challenged by Riley Kuntz.
South Carolina
While there are seven Congressional district in the Palmetto State (Districts 1, 4 and 6, respectively), the Democrats have primaries only in two. The Republicans hold them in the other four. Of note, Republican incumbents Tom Rice and Nancy Mace face challengers who received President Trump’s endorsement — State Representative Russell Fry and former Congresswoman Katie Arrington, respectively.
There are three Democrats running for Senate, and Tim Scott (no, not RedState’s Senior Editor!) is the Republican candidate. For the Governor’s office, Joe Cunningham (no, not RedState’s Senior Editor!) is back in the mix, along with four other candidates, including Mia McLeod, who, interestingly enough, is endorsed by Cunningham’s ex-wife. On the Republican side, it’s incumbent Henry McMaster, who faces a challenge from Harrison Musselwhite.
Texas 34
Special Election in Texas’ US House District 34 is being held with four candidates: Juana Cantu–Cabrera and Mayra Flores, two Republicans and Dan Sanchez and Rene Coronado, two Democrats.
