I’ll admit it. For a long time, I’ve been an avid Nigel Farage fangirl. Farage was the one who stood out for me during the Brexit campaign. He embodied what conservatives in America should look like. Farage was not only stylish, but he was also factual and level-headed. He displayed his ability to silence liberals with a manner that left them stunned. Despite numerous attacks which time and time again ended in the determination of Farage’s innocence, Farage never backed down from his convictions, which is among the highest of reasons why I hold him in such high regard.
Farage is a man I find charming, and he shares a love for beer with Bret Kavanaugh. As a result, I have long held the desire to “have a pint” with Nigel Farage. I have never previously been anywhere near the man, so I had never had the opportunity to fulfill that dream… That is, until CPAC 2022.
Townhall provided a space for media to meet their needs. I was happy to accept it. On Thursday I arrived at CPAC and made my way through the hall in an attempt to arrange interviews the next day. As I approached the top of the escalator heading to the other side of media row, I finally saw him… Nigel Farage. Because he was being interviewed elsewhere, I quietly waited for my turn.
Once he’d finished his interview, I approached the man and started my unusual request for an interview.
“Mr. “Mr. Farage, this is me here to report on CPAC for RedState. I would love to have an interview with your. I would rather forgo that, if it meant that I could buy you a pint.” In his graciousness, he said he would love that but did not have the time at the present to do that; however, he would grant me an interview the following day. I gave him and his handler the exact location details for the Townhall booth. He said the next morning that he’d be there to grant my interview.
Nigel Farage was not present the next morning. Disappointed but still understanding, I spent the next two days searching high and low for him — until Saturday, when he showed up at the media booth next to us for an interview. Once again, I asked for an interview. His handler had already remembered, but he said that he was busy and could not grant the interview. My hopes of interviewing Farage fell again, and I was both disappointed and understanding.
As CPAC 2022 wrapped up Sunday, RedState’s Kate Paul Dillon and I had set up camp poolside, to enjoy the last few hours of Florida sun and freedom, as well as my favorite sport of people-watching. The unexpected occurred at that moment. Then, he walks up and sets himself to sunbathe on the chair next to him.
Nigel saw me and offered to apologize for my inability to have an interview during CPAC. However, he thanked me again profusely, for all that I had said of him. He was kind enough to talk briefly with me and thanked me for his kindness towards the British people, as well for setting an example for other conservatives around the world. Ultimately, I knew he wasn’t there to talk to me, and I let him get on with his plans to relax in his final few hours in Florida, as well.
Farage was asleep just a few feet from me. I felt the need to purchase him a pint, but I had to be respectful of his privacy and relax. After thinking for a bit, I decided that buying Farage beer would not ruin his relaxation. It may even be beneficial. After whispering to Farage’s assistant (to clarify his beer preferences) I walked over to the bar, secured the beer, and returned to the spot I had previously found the mastermind of the Brexit Movement.
In Nigel’s absence, two other people had called him and asked them to help me achieve my goal. Nigel was gracious in his acceptance of the beer and I went back to Kate to bask in the victory. When I was writing a tweet announcing my victory, I turned to Nigel and told him how happy I was.
“Would a tweet about the matter would be good without a photograph?” Farage said. Farage held the Victory Beer towards me, while I put my shirt back on.
Nigel began laughing. “You mean like the song?” he questioned.
“What song?” I responded.
Nigel insisted I listen to Dominic Frisby’s song, which was written by British comedian Nigel Farage. The song, entitled “I’m Secretly In Love With Nigel Farage,” had several moments where Nigel and I were laughing hysterically and hanging all over one another.
After several minutes of laughter, a firm handshake and some more laughing, I returned to Kate’s chair.
Kate, who was grinning from ear to ear, chuckled then said, “Did you just form a bromance with Nigel Farage?”
“I DID!!” I proudly shouted back.
Nigel was just as approachable and as kind as one would hope. While I didn’t get my interview, I am more than happy with my experience and know that it will be a great introduction to any future opportunities I may have to interview him.
As I said, I’m always looking for a great story and an intro.
