Jussie Smollett Still Too Traumatized by ‘Racist Attack’ to Sleep at Night, Family Says

“What if Jussie is telling the truth?”

Jussie Smollett’s brother on Saturday claimed that the actor is still struggling to sleep because of “post trauma” related to being the supposed victim of a hate crime.

In an indignant op-ed for BET, JoJo Smollett continued to insist that his younger sibling accurately reported being assaulted by bigoted Trump supporters on Jan. 29. He said Chicago police wrongly determined that Jussie Smollett had staged the attack against himself as a publicity stunt, and pointed to prosecutors’ dropping of charges for filing a false police report as proof.

At least two investigations have been opened into that decision, which prompted outcry from local officials and the public.

JoJo Smollett, who runs a nonprofit for disabled people, went on to condemn his brother’s critics in the press and on social media, saying they “appeared to roast him, demean him, and laugh at a traumatic and painful ordeal.” Repeatedly mentioning that Jussie Smollett is black and gay, he singled out right-wingers for allegedly leading the charge.

“We can’t ignore the desire among the far-right to criminalize whole sectors of the country, which they either refuse to accept or feel are natural political opponents,” he said. “What exacerbates these problems is the bandwagoning and tyranny of the ‘perceived’ majority, which frequently takes shape on social media.”

According to JoJo Smollett, the criticism is especially unfair because Jussie Smollett is an “unusually good, soulful and spiritual man.” He said that he and his family have seen his brother bravely grapple with the trauma of allegedly being jumped on that dark and stormy night, including in his dreams.

“Jussie is as strong as iron, but following an attack like this, there is a normal and natural amount of post trauma that mostly anyone should expect to suffer,” he said. “I have literally seen him violently awakening from night terrors, following the assault. Some of my siblings, as well as Jussie’s partner and closest friends have seen similar things.”

People need to ask themselves, he concluded: “What if Jussie is telling the truth?”
