Jerry Falwell Jr. Outrages College Kids by Saying He’s Raising Granddaughter as Girl: ‘Transphobic!’

“She’s our granddaughter, and we’re raising her as a girl,”

Liberty University students protested over a pledge by Jerry Fallwell Jr., the schools’s president, and his wife to raise their new granddaughter as a girl.

Some 30 students demonstrated last Wednesday at the evangelical Christian university in Lynchburg, Virginia. They waved gay pride flags and held signs in support of transgender rights, with slogans like, “LGBTQ Lives Matter” and “Hate is a choice, being transgender is not.”

The Fallwells made the offending comments earlier in the day during a televised CPAC-related event held on campus. As part of a roundtable discussion of abortion, Becki Falwell mentioned that the couple had a new granddaughter, and added that the girl would not be allowed to chose her gender identity.

“She’s our granddaughter, and we’re raising her as a girl,” Falwell said. “We’re not letting her have a choice. God makes the choice of what the babies are going to be and God decided she would be a girl.”

Jerry Falwell added that they wouldn’t need to make much of an effort because “she’s got a little baby doll right under her arm every second.”

“My boys always had guns in their hands,” he said.

“Hashtag me too,” joked Donald Trump Jr., who was part of the conversation along with his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host.

Addyson Garner, an organizer of the protest and Liberty University’s senior class president, called the Falwells’ comments transphobic and admonished Trump for reducing the #MeToo movement to a punch line. She said the demonstration was intended to show support for students who are LGBT or victims of sexual abuse.

“Regardless of where you stand, we all agree that we should show those students love and support,” Garner told the local News & Advance newspaper. “Respecting people shouldn’t be controversial.”

Falwell has not responded to requests for comment on the remarks by journalists or Twitter users.

That transgender rights have become a rallying cry on an evangelical campus underlines the success of the social justice movement. The cause has rapidly become a top concern on the left, with even some of the wokest liberal activists struggling to catch up.
