A video taken by Texas father Jeff Younger shows his son James Younger, then age 3, saying “mommy … tells me I’m a girl.”
In the four-year-old clip, which has been viewed nearly 1 million times since being posted to Twitter Wednesday, James also says his mother paints his fingernails, buys him hair accessories and puts him in dresses.
Younger, who is fighting his ex-wife, Anne Georgulas, for sole conservatorship of their sons, said on a Christian podcast in January 2015 that he took the video after noticing changes in James’ behavior.
“You’re a boy, right?” Younger asks James in the video.
“No,” the boy responds. “I’m a girl.”
“Who told you you’re a girl?”
“When did she tell you you were a girl?”
“Because, I love girls!”
“Oh, I see. So mommy told you you’re a girl?”
After James confirms Georgulas has been dressing him like a girl, Younger asks: “So mommy puts you in a dress and puts nail polish on you?”
“Mhmm,” the boy says again.
“And what does mommy tell you?”
“She tells me I’m a girl.”
Behind the James Younger video
In Younger’s appearance on the “The Luke Macias” podcast, he said that he only “really understood” that James was being “sexually abused” by his ex-wife while taking the video on his cellphone.
“My three-year-old son tells me — he’s at my home — he tells me that he’s a girl. And I had the presence of mind, thank goodness, to pull out my iPhone and videotape me asking him about that. And that was literally the first time that I really understood what was happening to my son,” Younger said. “That was the first time I noticed. He was just past his third birthday.”
Younger said that, in his “personal assessment,” Georgulas was “only giving [James] love and affection if he acted like a girl.”
He also alleged that she “was putting my son into time-outs and she would lock him in his room and say that monsters only eat boys.”
Younger said Georgulas had fully “socially transitioned” James and enrolled him in school as Luna. He said the school staff refers to his son as a girl and that he uses the girls’ restroom.
“I’m the only authority figure in his life that tells him the truth; that he’s actually a boy,” Younger said.
“They’re asking me to affirm a delusion,” he added.
A court battle over custody and gender
On Monday, a Dallas jury awarded sole managing conservatorship of James and his twin brother, Jude, to Georgulas rather than Younger. According to the Washington Examiner, the decision paved the way for the Georgulas to allow James to receive hormone therapy.
Georgulas, a pediatrician, as well as counselors and therapists who testified on her behalf, told the court that James is transgender and had expressed to each of them that he wished he were a girl.
The Texan reported that Georgulas’ lawyers said the mother does not plan to give James hormone blockers at this time. But “no one has stated that she would not be open to using them when James begins puberty,” which would be around age 11 and a half for a boy, the report said.
Georgulas petitioned the court to force Younger to refer to James as Luna and limit his visits with the boys. She also asked that Younger not be allowed to expose James to anyone who would not “affirm” his identity as a girl.
“FYI the matter of 7 year old James Younger is being looked into by the Texas Attorney General’s Office and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services,” Abbott tweeted.
