Jesus Christ still casts a shadow longer than anyone who has ever lived on this li’l blue marble we call Earth–and rightly so.
The full God-man is also fully God, His teachings still influence everything we do. For all those who are open to believing that Jesus was the One and Only, His Crucifixion was and is the foundation of our salvation.
It’s quite simple, if one is willing to let go of all the chaos and confusion in the modern world.

Easter Sunday today, this makes it Holy Week. Today is Holy Thursday.
It got me to thinking about the movie “The Passion of the Christ.” I bought the DVD years ago, with every intention of watching it shortly thereafter. It was something I could not bring myself too do. I’m not sure what it was that was holding me back – I’m a believer and obviously familiar with the story of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, but I suppose the idea of actually seeing it recreated in (what I’d been forewarned was) graphic detail was a bit more daunting than reading about it in the Bible or even hearing a pastor preach on it.
About two years ago, I finally made a point to watch it and I’m so glad I did. As difficult as it was to watch, it really brought home the enormity of the sacrifice made for us – and of the depth and breadth of God’s love for us.
Susie mentioned that it’s very difficult to watch. It hasn’t gotten any easier over the years. This year, I divided it between Good Friday (and Holy Saturday) because it makes me cringe to see what Jesus endured in order to save us.

If you’re unfamiliar with “The Passion of the Christ,” it chronicles the last 12 to 15 hours of Jesus Christ’s life before he is crucified on the cross. This movie shows graphically how Roman prisoners were treated back then. It also contains flashbacks of Christ reminiscing about some of the teachings he gave to apostles. These are described in the Holy Bible.
Christ is shown being taken from the cross and then briefly pictured standing in the Tomb of Resurrection Sunday. This made me wonder what the apostles were doing on the day between Christ’s crucifixion, and resurrection last year.

Today is the day that most CHRISTian believers call Holy Saturday. Not much information is given about it in New Testament. I believe the only reference in the Bible to what any of the Apostles did on the night before the Resurrection was in Luke 23:56 – King James Version.
They returned and made ointments and spices; then they rested on the Sabbath day, according to the commandment.
What did Jesus’ followers do on the Friday after his death? For a short moment I tried to imagine myself as those women and men to gain a better understanding. I came up empty-handed.
To keep it brief and to the point, I believe they were simply
FREAKED OUT AND TERRIFIED.
It’s obvious that I would.
These men and women watched Jesus of Nazareth accomplish things no one else could. After being ensconced, Jesus had made enough bread and fish to feed many thousands of people, as well as healing lepers and other diseases. He also had the ability to raise his friend Lazarus from death a few days later. They were probably used to him performing miracles like breathing, so they believed anything could happen.

John The Apostle, along with Mary Magdalene and Jesus’ mother Mary, were the ones at the crucifixion of Christ according to the Bible and would have been able to relay back to the others on Friday night and Saturday what the horrific scenes were like. While they were resting on the Sabbath their thoughts must have been filled with immense sadness and fear about their lives.
They were most likely devastated, sad, angry and depressed on Saturday. Many people I spoke to said that the warning was given by Christ and that they did not listen. Christ himself did point out that some of his parables and warnings would not be comprehended and understood until a future time–and He was right.
It is this part that would probably have most tortured me. As I imagine my thoughts swirling in my head, trying to make sense of the things I’d seen and dealing with the fact, that my mentor, my friend, as well as my God, were so humiliated, I can almost see my brain spinning.
The first Holy Saturday, which I can only imagine was not holy in their minds was one of the most difficult days of their lives. They were all able to be witnesses to one of the most amazing events in history through the suffering and anguish they experienced on Saturday.
Jesus Christ the Son and God was raised from the dead.
This is the lesson I hope you take away from it. You may think you know everything and have things moving along smoothly. However, you will hit a skid and all of a sudden, things don’t seem to make sense–sometimes in a blink of an eye. This is the time to get in there, push down, and just keep going.
It was the bleakest Saturday ever. But it turned into one of the greatest Sundays in history 2,000 years ago when Jesus Christ’s followers and Roman guards discovered a empty tomb and conquered sin.
