It is officially the start of the Michigan race for state offices. Many are asking if Donald Trump may have made bad deals in his race to be Governor. This would just be another confusing move made in concert with the Republican Party operatives in Michigan that have been ineffective since John Engler’s departure in 2003.
Those of you who went through public schools, like myself, it means 19 years ago.
Michigan’s Republican Party (MRP) will hold a meeting in Grand Rapids this weekend to elect their nominees for Secretary and Attorney General. This August will see the primary to decide who is the GOP nominee for governor. This part is simple and understandable. Your statewide candidate for A.G. & S.O.S. a little over five months away from the election gives them enough time to build name recognition and critique the job currently done by Jocelyn Benson — the current Secretary of State and Dana Nessel the Attorney General.
Now comes the tricky part. This is how it gets murky.
According to veteran Michigan political reporter Tim Skubic, Donald Trump’s endorsement for governor in the primary this August will hinge on who gets the Attorney General nomination this weekend at the convention.
From Skubic’s Column explaining this odd rumor…
For a rare look into the inner game unfolding in front of your eyes, enter the room filled with smoke and John Yob (former President Donald Trump)
Yob is currently serving two main clients in this election: Perry Johnson who is running to be governor and Matthew DePerno for state attorney-general.
Trump has been pushing DePerno past the incumbent Democratic AG Dana Nessel to victory, but first he must get his nominee nominated at the Republican party convention scheduled for Saturday.
The Trump Campaign was asked for comment about what you’re reading, but that request came out more than a week ago.
However, two Michigan sources claim this is what’s coming down, as we clear away the smoke so you can have a peak:
If Yob can line up enough votes to secure the AG nomination for Trump’s guy, DePerno, then Trump will endorse Yob’s guy for the GOP nomination for governor, Johnson.
It’s the classic case of “you scratch my back and I will scratch yours.”
But what’s the problem? You are right to ask.
I’m asking “say what?” and also adding a couple of other choice phrases that cannot be posted here.
Now, I’m not naive, I know how politics works and the role of political consultants. Campaign workers are expected to ensure that their candidates get the best possible position in all circumstances. It is undoubtedly a great honor to get an endorsement from POTUS45. But, I’ve never seen a deal where you endorse one candidate and, if they win the election, endorse another. This is reminiscent of the Billy Mays commercials that offer a buy one get one deal.
When I first read this, I immediately thought this was one of those goofy rumor stories that you always hear at bars near closing, when somebody’s talking just a little bit too loud for their own good. Skubik is so trusted and well-known that he gets told heated things. Skubik has this information from two reliable sources, so he was able to print it. I take this as a sign to pause, and then wonder.
Do you think Donald Trump would be open to such a silly deal?
When Trump addressed the Pennsylvanian people about Dr. Oz, two weeks ago I found out that his base was not in agreement. Was Donald Trump really just trying to build bridges with his base in the Dr. Oz Endorsement scandal?. The ‘Trump walks on water’ social media brigade almost universally hated that move. If something so bizarre as an Attorney-General pick is endorsed by a candidate for Governor, I wonder if there could be a backlash.
It could be, or it might not.
I do know there is li’l room for error here in Michigan. The Great Lakes State currently is a blue state and must do everything possible to turn purple next November. Although Gov. Whitmer did a terrible job over the past four years she has still a good chance to be re-elected. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Files for Reelection — Can She Win?
It is as unbelievable and amazing as it sounds.
I hope Donald Trump did not make a move to keep any voter from leaving this fall, contrary to the rumor. I don’t think Ron DeSantis would make that move.
Four more years of Gretch and we will be all wretch.
