According to a report, Facebook de-platformed an Catholic charity calling for more efforts to end the forced conversions and kidnapping of Christian women living in Islamic countries.
A Facebook campaign was launched by London’s Aid to the Church in Need UK in November in conjunction with the new report. This report described how Muslim extremists abuse women of the Christian faith in various African and Middle Eastern countries. Catholic News Agency said.
Facebook notified the group about one week into the campaign that they were limiting the number of ads they could publish. But like YouTube’s recent censorship of conservative podcast host Steven Crowder, Facebook didn’t give a justification for its actions.
Facebook provided only a statement that the charity had several ads hidden or reported, and included a veiled swipe: “People hide and report ads because they find them to be offensive, misleading, sexually inappropriate, violent, about a sensitive topic or for other reasons.”
The mission of Aid to the Church in Need is to support the Catholic Church worldwide, especially in the countries that house Christians under persecution or discrimination. It also offers pastoral care and practical help to those in greatest need, including refugees and residents from these countries.
Facebook informed the group it was currently reviewing the situation. It offered no timeline “considering the circumstances,” in addition to the necessity for a “detailed investigation and solution,” Catholic News Agency said.
After the petition campaign drew 3,210 signatures, Facebook’s censorship essentially “killed” the effort, which the charity expected would ultimately garner 12,000 signatures, the article cited charity spokesperson John PontifexIt is a common saying.
“By curbing this campaign, [Facebook is] silencing these women twice over,” The group’s National Director Neville Kyrke-Smith told the news outlet. “They are silenced when they are seized from their homes and forced to live with their abductors, and have now been silenced again by Facebook,” he continued.
Catholic News Agency Facebook did not respond to MRC Free Speech America’s request for comments immediately.
