“Good luck in the General Election.”
Karen Mallard, a former candidate who destroyed her own AR-15, was handily defeated in a Democratic primary race. Her opponent was an arts and crafts instructor.
On June 12, Virginia’s 2nd US House District candidate Mallard, a gun control advocate, received less than 40 percent of the Democratic primary vote to her opponent’s 62 percent.
In March, Mallard uploaded a video to her Facebook account where she can be seen destroying an AR-15 her husband bought her with power tools in response to recent mass shootings.
“We need common-sense gun laws, and these military-style assault weapons are the ones being used in mass shooting,” Mallard told WUSA.”We need to get rid of the bump stocks, we need to get rid of those large magazines so we can make sure our citizens are safe.”
Mallard’s democratic opponent Elaine Luria, a former Navy officer who runs a Norfolk art studio called Mermaid Factory, had more than 60 percent of the vote, according to Ballotpedia.
“Congratulations to Elaine Luria for winning the Democratic Primary tonight,” Mallard wrote. “Good luck in the General Election.”
To be fair: Luria was the better funded candidate, receiving more than half a million dollars compared to Mallard who only raised $68,212 in campaign funding.
