For a former police commissioner, Charles Ramsay isn’t much of a detective.
CNN Day of the New this morning, former Philly police commissioner and senior CNN law enforcement analyst Ramsay twice confessed to being stumped for the reasons behind the current wave of smash and grab robberies.
Ramsay said:
“Many of our young arrestees had no criminal record.” The arrests were made in the following: What made them do this? I don’t know. . . So I don’t know what’s driving this.”
Ramsay stared at the question all of the time. He actually provided it! Ramsay:
“This type of crime comes with very little punishment.” Most cases, it is a misdemeanor. You can find alternatives. Some DAs said that shoplifting will not be prosecuted anymore.
Cause and effect, Commissioner Ramsay—hello? If there is little to no arrests and any punishment, people will commit crimes.
Ramsay used the term “teenagers” to refer to those who commit these crimes. You should inform Ramsay that the acceptable nomenclature for these crimes is “yuts.”
Chief Ramsey’s musings were sponsored in part by GlaxoSmith Kline, maker of Breathe Right strips, Samsung, Tylenol, Liberty Mutual, Sleep Number, Google, and ADT.

6:06 am ETKAITLIN COLLINS: Let’s bring in CNN senior law-enforcement analyst and former Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsay.
Charles, you just heard Christine’s report there. These are brazen attacks. This is an important shopping day. What is the law enforcement to do? Becaue we haven’t really seen a lot of arrests being made after these attacks are happening? They are now left to decide what they should do.
CHARLES RAMSAY: In Philadelphia, a similar event took place a few years back. There were people. Mostly teenagers, younger adultsParticipate in activities such as these.
. . .
Many of those we detained had never been convicted before. These young people were all innocent. Why they got involved in this is beyond me. . . . So I don’t know what’s driving this. It is a concern. But it will continue and won’t stop anytime soon.
This type of crime can be punished with very little. In most cases, it’s a misdemeanor. You can find alternatives. Some DAs said that shoplifting will not be prosecuted anymore. This isn’t shoplifting. This is much worse than shoplifting. So, there’s a lot that has to be done if we want to get a handle on it.
