A Florida woman is accused of punching her son in the face and dislocating his jaw because he refused to stop playing video games and take a shower.
Ann Perugia, 35, was arrested Wednesday evening at her South Daytona home, the Miami Herald reported.
According to an incident report from the South Daytona Police Department, Perugia told her 10-year-old son to stop playing Fortnite, an immensely popular online game, and shower up.
When she came back 10 minutes later and asked if he had showered yet, the boy replied, “no,” according to a release issued by authorities.
“He got up and started toward the bathroom, and that is when his mother got irate and charged into the bathroom. When the two got into the bathroom, [he] stated she punched him with a closed fist in the jaw,” the release said.
The blow dislocated the boy’s jaw, according to police.
The boy reportedly called his father who came to pick him up. Perugia told the boy’s father to take his son and leave, according to a police report.
Perugia disputed her son’s account in a statement to police,
While Perugia acknowledged arguing with her son over his refusal to stop playing Fortnite and shower, she denied striking him in the face.
“The only thing she did was grab [the boy] by his arm and brought him back inside,” a police report said.
Perugia told police her son had said: “I hate you and you don’t do anything for me.“
Following an investigation, Perugia was arrested.
In an incident report, police said the child had “scratches around his body that were caused by the mother.”
“This malicious act also caused her son unjustifiable pain and injury,” authorities said in the report. “This act has no valid reason to subject the child to that kind of punishment for failing to listen to his mother.”
Perugia has been charged with infliction of mental and physical injury to a child.
The boy is staying with an aunt because his father does not have full custody.
