“*whispers* That’s a Democrat.”
New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s mockery of Republicans backfired Thursday after she failed to recognize that the man posing with a cardboard cutout of her is a fellow Democrat.
The congresswoman’s since-deleted tweet hinted at Republican sexism.

“Nobody: GOP: Let’s pose our older male members next to cardboard cutouts of young female legislators,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in a caption accompanying a photo shared by the Republican Party of Kentucky’s Twitter account.
There was just one problem with the progressive lawmaker’s attempt at snark.
As users pointed out, the man in the photograph is Kentucky Rep. John Harmuth, a Democrat and Ocasio-Cortez’s colleague in the House.
Commenters were quick to blast Ocasio-Cortez for her error.
“Um….that is a Democrat posing (Rep. Yarmouth), not a Republican,” tweeted Manhattan Institute senior fellow Brian Riedl. “He’s the chairman of the Budget Committee. You should know this.”
“*whispers* That’s a Democrat,” wrote National Republican Senatorial Committee senior advisor Matt Whitlock.
“It literally says that he’s a Democrat in the tweet,” Whitlock added.

The Republican Party of Kentucky’s tweet referenced reports that the Democratic Socialists of America chapter in Louisville is threatening to primary Yarmuth if he fails to support single-payer health care in his role as chairman for the House Budget Committee.
“#ThrowbackThursday last month the socialists threatened the lone Kentucky Democrat in Congress if he didn’t bend to their radical, extremist will: looks like AOC and socialism are calling the shots for KyDems now!” The Republican Party of Kentucky tweeted.
As for Ocasio-Cortez, her latest gaffe serves as more fodder for her numerous critics on the right. Among conservatives and liberals alike, Ocasio-Cortez continues to be a lightning rod and a central figure in the mainstream culture wars. A perennial target of criticism on Fox News, as well as a frequent instigator of Twitter spats, her (and her social media team’s) success at riling up her ideological opposition has earned her comparisons to President Donald Trump. And while right-leaning detractors peg the 29-year-old politician as a paper tiger with all flash and no substance, she continues to win plaudits from the legions of left-leaning admirers who appreciate her unapologetic progressivism.
Earlier this week, Ocasio-Cortez was lambasted on social media after video emerged of the progressive Democrat urging against the reform of the beleaguered Department of Veterans Affairs and calling it “this thing that provides the highest quality care to our veterans.”
