Thai Man Uses Scissors to Cut Off Passed Off British Backpackers Shorts, Rapes Her

“Drunk and Sleeping.”

A 21-year-old British backpacker way raped in the Koh Phi Phi area of Thailand after passing out drunk while celebrating the country’s new year according to a Thursday Daily Mail report.

The woman tried to walk back to her hostel in the early morning hours Monday after drinking all night and participating in mass water fights, but slumped on the ground and passed out near a restaurant. Shortly after, local deck hand Trairat Changsanan walked by and used scissors to cut the woman’s shorts off and raped her.

When the woman woke up the next morning, she feared she’d been raped and contacted local police. According to police, the woman remembered little about the incident because she was “drunk and sleeping” when it occurred. Police say she was imbibing alcoholic drinks from a bucket until the bar closed at 1 a.m.

“She came with no actual evidence of the incident, so the investigators took her to the hospital for her body to be checked in order to find traces of sexual abuse,” Police Colonel Krissana Patanacharoen said.

But CCTV footage outside the restaurant, which showed the alleged attack while other cameras in the area showed a man walking suspiciously, led authorities to Changsanan. He was arrested Wednesday.

Police say Changsanan admitted to the attack, actually taking officers to the scene of the incident and pointing out where he raped the woman.

Changsanan told police he was walking home after a night of drinking when he noticed the woman sleeping and decided to rape her.

He now faces charges of rape and violent threatening behavior against a person who was in a state of inability to resist.

While the Koh Phi Phi area is popular with western tourists, the destination has been plagued by sexual violence in recent months.

A German backpacker, Miriam Beelte, was the victim of a rape and murder on the island of Koh Si Chang earlier this month. In September, an 18-year-old British tourist was drugged, stripped, robbed and raped on Sairee Beach.

Police have tried to crack down on the sexual violence in the area, going so far as to encourage women to “dress conservatively” as a way of preventing a being attacked.
