Sarah Sanders Asked If She Can Guarantee We’ll Never Hear Trump Say N-Word on Tape

“This is a president who is fighting for all Americans.”

During a White House press briefing Tuesday, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to guarantee that a recording of President Donald Trump uttering the N-word does not exist.

“Can you guarantee from that podium that the American people will never hear Donald Trump utter the N-word on a recording?” NBC News’ Kristen Welker asked.

“I can’t guarantee anything, but I can tell you that the president addressed this question directly,” Sanders replied. “I can tell you that I’ve never heard it.”

“This is a president who is fighting for all Americans, who is putting policies in place that help all Americans. Particularly African-Americans,” Sanders added. “Just look at the economy alone. This president since he took office, in the year and a half since he’s been here, has created 700,000 new jobs for African-Americans.”

Welker’s question directly referenced claims by former White House aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman about the existence of a recording that features Trump using the N-word.

The explosive allegation, one of the many contained in Manigault’s new tell-all book about her time in the White House, have reignited concerns about Trump’s stance toward minorities.

Trump, and supporters like Sanders, counter accusations that the president is racist by pointing to economic indicators that appear to show progress for black Americans.

P.R. Lockhart, writing for Vox in June, argued that Trump’s claims taking credit for an economic boon for black Americans are misleading.

“While it’s undeniable that the rate has hit a new low, it is also true that black unemployment began declining during the Obama administration and has been falling steadily for the past several years,” Lockhart wrote. “Trump hasn’t reversed those gains, but that doesn’t mean he can claim full credit for them either.”
