Ocasio-Cortez Gets Schooled After She Wrongly Blames ICE for Deaths of Children

“The idea that ICE should be scrapped isn’t so crazy after all.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revived her call to disband the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in response to a tweet by Comedian Mohanad Elshieky describing being detained by allegedly abusive officers. One problem: The officers who mistreated Elshieky weren’t ICE.

Elshieky, a Lebanese with a legal asylum status in the United States, posted on Sunday that he had been held up by border officers on his trip from Spokane, Washington, to Portland, Oregon. According to Elshieky, the officers interrogated him outside the bus in the freezing cold for 20 minutes. Though he was able to show his work permit and other documentation proving his legal status, the officers disregarded them, saying that they could very well be “falsified,” Elshieky wrote.

Upon seeing Elshieky’s tweet, the social-democrat shared it with her followers.

“One of these days, I hope people realize that the idea that ICE should be scrapped isn’t so crazy after all,” she tweeted.

While at it, Ocasio-Cortez threw more more blame on the agency, writing that, “ICE jails children in for-profit detention centers funded by private equity [groups]. Kids are dying [with zero] accountability. If that’s not totally broken, I don’t know what is.”

But a photo Elshieky shared of his tormenters showed that the agents did not belong ICE, but to the Customs and Border Protection agency.

Moreover, the deaths Ocasio-Cortez referred to — two immigrant children who died of disease in December — also occurred under the custody of the CBP, not ICE. Following the deaths, the CBP requested help from other agencies to better treat children in their custody.

As political Twitter influencer AG_Conservative pointed out, the New York representative’s casual thoughts about dismantling a federal agency based on the errors (or arguably misconduct) of another was ignored by the the majority of the media (that is, the very people who have made it into a passion project to track, dissect, and color-code President Donald Trump’s tweets for falsehoods.)

Elshieky promptly admitted the error, Ocasio-Cortez, a pioneer among Democrats of the #AbolishICE hashtag, did not. After all, it’s about being “morally right,” right?
