Lee Trolls Ocasio-Cortez on Senate Floor With Photo of Dinosaur Reagan

“This is of course a picture of former president Ronald Reagan, naturally firing a machine gun while riding on the back of a dinosaur.

Sen. Mike Lee triggered a less than thrilled response from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when he took to the Senate floor Tuesday and made an unorthodox case against the Green New Deal proposal championed by the freshman congresswoman.

In a 14-minute-long presentation, the Utah Republican used portraits of late President Ronald Reagan riding a velociraptor while firing a machine gun, Tauntauns from “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” and DC Comics superhero Aquaman to illustrate his argument.

Lee’s main point was that while his monologue might have been a bit silly, it wasn’t nearly as absurd as the “unserious” proposals contained in the Green New Deal, such as the elimination of all air travel.

“This is of course a picture of former president Ronald Reagan, naturally firing a machine gun while riding on the back of a dinosaur,” Lee said. “You’ll notice a couple of important features here: first of all, the rocket launcher strapped to President Reagan’s back, and then the stirring, unmistakeable patriotism of the velociraptor holding up a tattered American flag, a symbol of all it means to be an American.”

Lee continued with a pop culture reference to classic science-fiction film series “Star Wars.”

“In a future without air travel, how are we supposed to get around the vast expanses of, say, Alaska, during the winter,” Lee asks. “I’ll tell you how. Tauntauns, Mr. President. This is a beloved species of reptomammals, native to the ice planet of Hoth. They’re perhaps not as efficient in some ways as airplanes or snowmobiles, these hairy bipedal species of space lizards offer their own unique benefits. Not only are Tauntauns carbon-neutral, but according to a report a long time ago and issued far, far away, they may even be fully recyclable and usable for their warmth on a cold night.”

Next Lee tackled the problem of how citizens of Hawaii would get to the mainland in a future with no air travel. His tongue-in-cheek solution?  Aquaman riding a fish.

Ocasio-Cortez was not amused. Following Lee’s stunt, the New York Democrat tweeted, “If this guy can be Senator, you can do anything”.

Lee’s Senate speech came in the wake of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plan to allow a vote on the Green New Deal, making good on a promise he made back in February.

Republicans have been extremely critical of Ocasion-Cortez’s ambitious plan, claiming it does little to seriously address climate change while proposing unrealistic and expensive policies.
