Cher Turns on Immigrants After Promising to Adopt Them: ‘My State Can’t Take Care of Its Own’

“Amazing, simply amazing. I guess the leftists are only pro illegals when they can lay the huge burden on someone else.”

Pop music legend Cher was lambasted following a Sunday tweet in which the Los Angeles-based liberal singer, who has in the past fervently expressed her sympathies for illegal immigrants, responded to President Donald Trump’s proposal to release detained immigrants into sanctuary cities by saying that her state needed to “Take Care of Its Own” citizens first.

“I Understand Helping struggling Immigrants, but MY CITY (Los Angeles) ISNT TAKING CARE OF ITS OWN,” she tweeted. “WHAT ABOUT THE 50,000+ Citizens WHO LIVE ON THE STREETS.PPL WHO LIVE BELOW POVERTY LINE,& HUNGRY? If My State Can’t Take Care of Its Own(Many Are VETS)How Can it Take Care Of More.”

Cher’s “50,000+ Citizens” comment was accompanied by an American flag emoji.

The pop star’s comments are a radical departure from those she made on Twitter in 2017, when she urged Americans to take undocumented immigrants – specifically, the so-called Dreamers – into their homes and expressed her own willingness to house them.

Cher’s comments sparked swift and brutal backlash from conservatives who accused her of hypocrisy and logical inconsistency. “Amazing, simply amazing. I guess the leftists are only pro illegals when they can lay the huge burden on someone else,” tweeted the president’s son, Donald Trump. Jr., in response to the singer’s remarks.

Many commenters opined that Cher’s newfound stance sounded eerily similar to that of hardline anti-immigration conservatives and “America First” Trump supporters. “I guess you used all 280 characters so you didnt have enough space to add #MAGA #KAG at the end of your tweet,” quipped conservative comedian Tim Young.

Some pundits even suggested Cher had been “redpilled.”

Cher answered critics in a followup tweet, saying that her objections to the Trump administration’s plan were aimed at its purportedly retaliatory nature.

“There must be a process.Ppl who are looking 4 asylum,& Qualify, must be given access 2 judges,&properly interviewed,” she tweeted.”Then They can be sent’EVENLY’ 2cities. Not Just THOUSANDS Bussed 2Calif,NY,Etc 4 revenge. These are ppl.WE ARE SANCTUARY CITIES BECAUSE WE DONT THROW PPL 2 DOGS.”

On Friday Trump confirmed a Washington Post report that revealed the White House had weighed a proposal that would have resulted in the release of immigrant detainees in San Francisco and other sanctuary cities.

According to the report, the Trump administration twice proposed sending the detainees to sanctuary cities, including those in Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s California district.

In a November email, the White House asked several agencies whether it would be possible to bus arrested migrants to “small-and mid-sized sanctuary cities.” Among other Democratic strongholds, Pelosi’s district in San Francisco was considered a target.
